The protagonist of the video is the deaf girl and the antagonist is the mean girl who goes to school with her. I feel like the setting of the story could be either a predominantly Asian area of America or somewhere in Asia itself. The maker of the story uses direct characterization when he shows that she’s deaf and plays violin, but they also show you her feelings and show you that she just wants to fit in and I think that is indirect characterization. The internal conflict of the story is the deaf girl just wanting to fit in society, and the external conflict is the deaf girl wanting to beat the mean girl in the competition and the climax is when the deaf girl plays at the competition amazingly. There was irony when the mean girl just thought that since the girl was deaf that she couldn’t play violin well and she was wrong. The theme behind the video is that you can’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something.

At first when I watched the video I thought there was no way that this was actually real and that it was just a sound put into the video to be funny, but after reading this wikipedia page about what such great mimickers they are I was convinced that this was in fact true. It’s amazing what’s out there waiting to be found in the world. The fact that the bird was able to mimic chainsaw sounds and a camera sound was amazing also, but it also showed the effect that people have on animals in their natural habitat. People see themselves as the ultimate species so they think that they can do whatever they want to the rest of the world. In the belief of natural selection it states that the more dominant species will survive and the less powerful species will have to adapt or die out. This belief only works with animals in my opinion. When people can destroy an animal’s natural habitat in a very short amount of time it’s almost unfair to think that an animal is supposed to compete with a human….

Pencil Face

Pencil Face was a quite weird video that we watched today in class. The mood set in it was one of an eerie video that kind of creepedme out. One of the main things that set this eerie and creepy mood for the video was the music and the fact that there was no dialog in the video. I believe that it’s theme would have to be that you can’t always get everything you want without something bad happening along the way, or in the girl in the video’s case a black hole. Greed and glutton being the downfall of all could also be seen as a theme or moral of this video, because if the girl would’ve been happy that she even had something as great as this then maybe she wouldn’t have just gone on a drawing spree that ultimately put her in the black hole she drew.

I believe if I had a pencil like that I would draw many things but mainly one thing, money. People say that money can’t buy you happiness, and I believe that is true but it can do many things to make you happy. Who knows? Maybe I’ll draw something that will make the world a better place, or just like in the video I could draw something that could be the downfall of me. Either way I would be completely not against having that pencil.

Sorting People

The PBS Sorting People test thing was harder than I thought. I only got about seven people in their correct races. I found that you really can’t judge people on their looks, especially whenever you are trying to put them in catagories that have to do with race. I learned that people are judged every day by what race they look like and the bad part is that’s probably not even the race that they are actually, but it’s still the one that people put them into. I also thought as a white person that I would get all of the white people into their correct boxes, but I think I only got one white person in the correct category! This activity has taught me that as the old saying goes, “You can’t judge a book by it’s cover”.

I actually haven’t ever blogged before, but I’m always open to seeing and learning new things. I hope to take this blog as serious as I possibly can and I hope to use it to it’s fullest potential.

Summer Reading assignment

Since I’ve already read all of my books and answered all the stuff I need to about them I guess my little assignment here won’t be as good as some of my other peers, but I’ll do my best. I chose to read Fahrenheit 451 first for the same reason anyone else who chose this book first, because it’s the shortest. I saw that I really didn’t read very well in the morning because I’m too tired to read in the morning, so I usually stayed up most nights reading when I feel as though I comprehend more. I really enjoyed many of the books I was forced to read this year (except McTeague) and I can’t wait to get in this class with my fellow book-readers.
